Mulethi is an effective traditional herb that is widely used in Indian medicines, folk medicines, home remedies, and Ayurveda. It is a classical Ayurvedic remedy and has been used in centuries as grandma’s remedy for sore throat and cough. Adhimadhuram – Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has been used in food and as medicine for thousands of years. Licorice root has been used in both Eastern and Western medicine to treat a variety of illnesses ranging from the common cold to liver disease. It acts as a demulcent, a soothing, coating agent and as an expectorant.

Adhimadhuram is also called as Liquorice, Mulaithi or Yashtimadu. Glycyrrhiza is a word derived from the ancient Greek term ‘glykos’, meaning sweet, and ‘rhiza’, meaning root . Glycyrrhiza glabra plays an important part in Ayurveda and Siddha.

Adhimadhuram is used for various digestive system complaints including stomach ulcers, heartburn, colic, and ongoing inflammation of the lining of the stomach (chronic gastritis)

Adhimadhuram is also a traditional remedy for sore throat, bronchitis, cough and infections caused by bacteria or viruses.

The roots and rhizomes are the main medicinal parts of licorice, said to have antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antiviral, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and anti-ulcer activity.

It is an important herb for treating hormone-related female problems. It is used as an energy tonic, particularly for the spleen and stomach, and the root is added to many preparations.

    In traditional medicine, Adhimadhuram has been recommended as a prophylactic agent for gastric and duodenal ulcers, promotes the healing of ulcers of the stomach and mouth. Adhimadhuram root is useful for treating cough due to its demulcent and expectorant property.

Caution: Can cause water retention and raised blood pressure. Prolonged use should be avoided if you suffer from high blood pressure. Avoid during pregnancy.

Direction for use: Mix 2-3 g of Adhimadhuram powder with honey or warm milk and take or as advised by doctor
