Thippili (Long pepper) is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.It is also known as pippali and has numerous health benefits. From fighting against bacterial infections to prevention against liver ailments, it has many other useful benefits.
Nutritional Value of Thippili (Long Pepper)
Thippili, or long pepper, or pippali, is rich in alkaloids, beta sitosterol, and analgesic. It also has a ton of eugenol, glycosides, piperine, resins, sugar, saturated fat, essential oil, volatile oil, piplartine, myrcene, terpenoids, quercetin, triacontane, and sylvatine. These are all essential nutrients and compounds that contribute to the better functioning of your entire system.
- Liver Ailments
Liver ailments plague many of us because we ingest a lot of oily, junk food. All those burgers, French fries and oil-slicked fried food lead to liver problems. However, Thippili (long pepper) is known to have a healing effect on the overworked liver. It also helps in eliminating toxins that build up inside the liver due to the metabolism of these foods.

Thippili benefits against coughing too. If you are suffering from cough, thippili can come in handy. To make a remedy out of thippili, take about 1 to 2 grams of the spice, fry it in a little bit of ghee. Once cool, swallow it whole. You can also mix long pepper and honey and swallow it to relieve sore throat.
Thippili contains some stomach soothing chemicals, which can treat indigestion. Add thippili powder in your food while cooking and see the effect for yourself.
These benefits have been observed in regular thippili consumers. However, there is no conclusive proof as to whether there is a direct connection between thippili consumption and curing of the following conditions.
Thippili is said to reduce fever. If you have fever, make a warm bowl of thippili soup. This can bring down fever and if you have a sore throat, it will also soothe that. It has great antiseptic and antibiotic properties.
If you have a toothache, thippili is a good remedy. Instead of salt water gargling and ice packs, make a paste of thippili salt, and water. Now smear this on the pained gum area and keep it there for an hour.
In the same way thippili benefits indigestion, it also reduces diarrhea. Drink long pepper soup to soothe your stomach.
It is said that regular consumption of thippili can reduce the intensity or frequency of an asthma attack. However, it is in no way a replacement for medicine.

How To Consume?
- Powdered choornam of thippili roots are chewed well by Varma Asans (Physicians) for blowing into the nose of the patient in conditions like faintness, giddiness etc.
- The roots of the plants are taken and ground with milk and given for thirst and vali noi.
- Siddha medicines like Thippili rasayanam is very effective drug for cough and bronchial ailments.
- Chukku, Milagu (Pepper) and Thippili when purified and mixed in equal quantity is known as Thirikadugu. This is an effective digestive, carminative and expectorant and passifies the three humours (Vali, Azhal and Iyam).
- Thippili is taken as karpam by mixing its powder with honey and administered for one month.
- Thippili choornam 1/4 palam (1 palam = 35 grams) is taken and added to 350 ml of cows milk and boiled and taken internally. This is an effective remedy for Irumal (cough), Vaivu (flatulance), Morchai (faintness) and Muppini (derrangement of three humours).
- Thippili powder fried in ghee and taken in dose of one to two gram twice a day for cough and cold.
- For diarrhoea due indigestion one to six gram of thippili powder is mixed with 200 to 300 ml of butter milk and given.
